Euopean Parliament approves the copyright reform, online video services will remove copyright-protected TV and cinema contents.
After the European Parliament’s vote, the text should be approved by the EU Council, then the copyright reform will be a law. Media companies have expressed their satisfaction.
Between the new rules, there is also the controversial Article 17 which requires internet services with at least 5 million average monthly users (as YouTube or Facebook) to make the “best efforts” to prevent the upload of content flagged as copyright-protected unless there are licensing agreements between an internet platform and right holders.
The rules included in the final text protect individual users’ fair use of copyrighted material, for example, in memes which are often based on movie and TV series scenes.
