To date, the ten films to have grossed the most this year are Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Despicable Me 4, Dune – Part 2, Godzilla x Kong, Kung-Fu Panda 4, Beetlejuice, Venom: The Last Dance, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ten titles, ten sequels that mark an important fact. If a film is successful, people will be more likely to return to see its sequel.
Sociologist Gabriel Rosseman of the University of California pointed out that “the box office has largely recovered from the extremely low numbers of the COVID era, but not quite. Today it seems to have reached a new equilibrium of 75 percent of the pre-COVID level.”
A comforting given also by the choices made. Playing it safe, choosing to focus on highly successful titles, provided assured revenue and helped in the new climb after the pandemic disaster. On the other hand, some slight changes in the ranking are still expected, given the very recent release of Wicked with Ariana Grande, which, most likely, will enter with a leg up among the big titles of 2024.
