There are two international productions in Rome to shoot a film and a TV series about the story of J. Paul Getty III, grandson of the famous millionaire J. Paul Getty I, who was abducted in Piazza Farnese on 10 July 1973. The news severely shook international public opinion, due to the macabre detail of the right ear of the guy (he was 16 when he was abducted), mutilated and delivered to the family to speed up the ransom payment.
The film will be directed by Ridley Scott and it will be titled “All the Money in the World”, while the TV series, directed by Danny Boyle, will be entitled “Trust” and the shooting will start in mid-August.
Besides the curious coincidence, it’s interesting that both productions are using the recent regulation on tax credit for international productions, which is equal to 25% of the production cost for the single work.
Mark Huffman, the producer of the movie, has defined the tax credit “very good, because it is structured so that we can reclaim a large part of the budget”. “All the Money in the World” is produced by Scott Free Prods. and it stars Kevin Spacey as J. Paul Getty I, Michele Williams as his wife Gail Harris and Mark Wahlberg as the CIA agent in charge of negotiating with kidnappers. The role of Getty’s grandson is assigned to the young Charlie Plummer. The release date has not been announced yet.
About “Trust”, produced by FX Networks, shooting will last 20 weeks and take place between Rome and Calabria. Enzo Sisti, the executive producer, has mentioned that “Trust is the first TV project using the regulation on tax credit”. Planned for 2018, the series stars Donald Sutherland as J. Paul Getty and Hilary Swank as his wife.
Luciano Sovena, the President of the Roma Lazio Film Commission, is excited about the projects, “both are a great source of income for the Italian industry”. Note that Scott’s movie crew is 90% Italian workforce.
