After months of negotiations, screenwriters’ and authors’ trade associations obtain an agreement with Netflix on “created by / created by,” which is the recognition of authorship in audiovisual product titles, for the first time in Italy and among the first in Europe, whereas in the U.S. audiovisual industry it is an ordinary credit.
The attribution of creative work has as its premise a set of writing preconditions identified by WGI Writers Guild Italia and 100authors in consultation with Netflix through guidelines, which in fact represent a standard for drafting contracts with Italian producers for Italian Netflix shows.
“For the first time the ‘Created by’ is recognized in our country. It has been a long work, a goal we have been pursuing for years, this being one of the very prerequisites of the birth of Wgi, and today we can say that we have kept our promise! This achievement would not have been possible without the coordination with 100authors and the advocacy of lawyer Roberto Minutillo Turtur. In addition to this achievement, we worked with Netflix to draft contractual guidelines to protect authors. I thank Netflix Italia for the fruitful discussion and for the recognition of WGI’s role in protecting its members,” WGI President Giorgio Glaviano comments on the result.
