2023 investments by streamers and broadcasters in European original content, i.e. any programme developed by an audiovisual service operating in the EU, amount to €22 billion compared to €20.4 billion in 2022.
This is reported by the European Audiovisual Observatory, which published a new report entitled ‘Audiovisual services spending on original European content‘.
The data in the report confirm the positive trend that has affected the sector in recent years, although the figure prsrnts a slight decline compared to the years immediately following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Of the €22 billion invested in the European original content sector, €5.7 billion come from international streamers: in particular, Amazon Prime has increased its spending in Europe to €1.5 billion in 2023, while Netflix remains the leading streaming service in terms of investment in the sector with €2 billion, although the figure is down on the previous year. This is followed by Disney+ with €0.8 billion, AppleTV+ with €0.5 and HBO Max with €0.4.
Over 50% of international streamers’ spending occurred in the UK and Spain, while for Italy, as well as France and Germany, the figure was 11% of the total.
Investments by public and private broadcasters also increased, but here the figure is bifurcated, since in some European countries such as Germany and Belgium it is the public sector that commissioned more content, while in others including Italy and France it was the private sector.
