It is $2.34 billion in revenue for Japanese animation studios for the year 2023.
Screen Daily analyzed Teikoku Databank’s report, which highlighted that the revenue contribution of animated films such as Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume ($133.4 million worldwide) and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron ($173.5 million and an Oscar) to the Japanese film market has been crucial. The increase, in fact, was about 30 percent year-on-year.
This is a big leap forward that will, according to what the studio says, in the long run allow it to face the challenge of copyright protection of “anime” with greater confidence.
Those who benefited most from the increase in revenues were the large studios (77.5 percent), compared to smaller subcontracted production houses where growth was lower (57 percent). This is because larger companies are more likely to join larger financing groups, thus being able to benefit from the film’s success.
