The Italian animation sector is experiencing a moment of growth, with a total turnover of €200 million and a 30% increase in employment compared to 2018.

This is what the data presented during the panel NEXT GENERATION MOVIE CREATIVES: FROM SCHOOL TO SHOWBIZ. A SPOTLIGHT ON ANIMATION held on Sunday 3 September 2023 at the Italian Pavilion during the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival.

Presenting the results was Alfio Bastiancich, Vice President of Cartoon Italia and guest speaker at MIA 2022 in the panel New Models and Scenarios for the Italian Industry.

This growth is even more striking when compared to the data presented at the States General of animation in 2016, when the sector’s turnover amounted to €100 million and total employment stood at 3000 compared to 6000 in 2023.

In the face of these increases, the figure for co-productions remains unchanged, remaining the main means of financing: 75% of projects are developed in this way.

Rai is confirmed as a leading player in the animation sector thanks to the high number of co-productions supported and finished products distributed through its channels.
