Environmental Sustainability & Awareness

MIA embraces the values of environmental awareness and economic and social sustainability, continuing its crucial journey towards achieving a fully sustainable market event from an environmental, social, and economic standpoint. Through numerous concrete actions and best practices, in collaboration with Trentino Film Commission and Green Film, MIA adopts a certified ISO20121 system for sustainable events. MIA’s improvement program is inspired by the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and specifically contributes to the implementation of the following sustainability goals:

  • Preference for local suppliers (short supply chain).

  • Waste reduction and promotion of separate waste collection and recycling.
  • Use of glass bottles, Tetra Pak packaging, and compostable tableware.
  • Migration of the MIA website to environmentally sustainable, low-impact hosting infrastructure.

  • Improving accessibility.
  • Donation of surplus food.
  • Valorization of typical local products.
  • Dissemination of good practices for social well-being within audiovisual productions.
  • Dissemination of good practices for reducing environmental impacts within audiovisual productions.
  • Communication and sharing of sustainable choices.

Raising Industry Awareness on Sustainability.

MIA develops programs and initiatives to foster awareness of sustainable practices in the audiovisual industry, with a particular focus on reducing environmental impact and supporting the transition towards more responsible production models in line with leading European green protocols.

In collaboration with its longstanding sustainability partner, Green Film, since 2022 MIA has offered selected projects from the Co-Production Market & Pitching Forum (Doc, Drama and Film) the opportunity to meet with a Green Film expert for dedicated sustainability consultations. Green Film is a certification brand for environmental sustainability awarded to audiovisual productions that adopt measures to reduce their environmental impact.

Building on this commitment, in 2026 MIA once again hosts an Open Session dedicated to sustainability and environmental awareness in the audiovisual sector, following the successful experience of 2023. The initiative is organised in collaboration with Green Film Lab. a workshop open to industry professionals focused on sustainable practices in audiovisual production, the implementation of green protocols, and sustainability certification. For the Roma edition Green Film Lab is organized in partnership with Fondazione Roma Lazio Film Commission, providing a platform for industry professionals, institutions and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, share best practices and promote a more sustainable audiovisual industry.

Certified Sustainability Management.

MIA has strengthened its commitment to sustainable event management by adopting an internationally recognised Sustainability Management System certified by RINA. Since 2025, MIA has been certified in accordance with ISO 20121:2024, the international standard for sustainable event management systems, and ISO 25639-2:2008, which defines quality and safety requirements for event services and structures. These certifications demonstrate MIA’s commitment to integrating environmental, social and economic sustainability into the planning, organisation and continuous improvement of the event, while ensuring high standards of quality, safety and stakeholder engagement in line with international best practices.

Sustainability Policy.

MIA’s commitment to sustainability is guided by a dedicated Sustainability Policy, which defines the principles, objectives and actions underpinning the organisation and continuous improvement of the event. Based on the principles of ISO 20121, the Policy outlines MIA’s commitments to environmental responsibility, social inclusion, accessibility, stakeholder engagement and transparent governance, while supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainability Policy is publicly available on the MIA website, ensuring transparency and encouraging all participants, partners and stakeholders to contribute to the shared sustainability objectives.
