The talk “Producing with AI: Augmentation or Replacement?” focused on how artificial intelligence is transforming the audiovisual industry. The speakers included Max Wiedemann, Co-Chief Production and Business Development Officer and Head of AI at LEONINE Studios, and Tom Paton, Founder and CEO of AiMation, moderated by Stephen Saltzman, Partner & Head of the International Entertainment Group at FieldFisher.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to optimize production processes, reduce costs, and accelerate the various stages of audiovisual production, from pre-production to post-production. It can support editing, the creation of special effects, and the development of content that combines traditional footage with artificially generated material.

As emerged during the talk, AI is not merely a means of producing content at a lower cost, but also an opportunity to experiment with new forms of entertainment. This has given rise to the concept of the democratization of creativity, as independent filmmakers and small teams can now develop projects without requiring large budgets or extensive production infrastructure.

This transformation requires future filmmakers to acquire new skills and learn how to integrate technological tools into their creative processes.

AI can facilitate experimentation, make it possible to test ideas, and bring projects to life that were previously too expensive to produce. However, greater accessibility also leads to an increase in the amount of content available, making it even more important to stand out through originality, aesthetic sensibility, and narrative quality.

Directors will therefore need to maintain a personal vision and use technology as a supporting tool without relinquishing artistic control.

Storytelling remains central: technology can support writing and image creation, but the ability to craft meaningful stories and convey emotions continues to depend largely on human sensibility.

The talk also addressed issues concerning the protection of creative work, copyright, and intellectual property, which came to the forefront during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

In conclusion, Al Munteanu, CEO of BRISKPACE UNLIMITED (Germany), offered an optimistic perspective on AI, emphasizing that the quality of a good idea remains fundamental. He presented The Light and Hard Times of Buddy Bristol, a project developed in collaboration with Tom Paton, which demonstrates how artificial intelligence can open up new creative and production opportunities while keeping an original vision at the heart of the process.
