Italians like VoD (video on demand) especially in streaming, this is what emerges from a research developed by Ernst & Young. Subscriptions to online services will soon exceed those to pay-TV.

Choose what to watch, when and above all where. Through VoD (Video on demand) services all this it’s possible. As it happens in other countries, Svod (Subscription video on demand) are increasing. A trend in which the number of subscriptions is getting closer (exceeding it in the forecasts) to that of pay-TV. According to an Ernst & Young study – commissioned by Sky, Mediaset, Discovery and Vodafone – subscriptions to paid video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Timvision, Now Tv, Infinity and Eurosport Player have gone from 2.3 to 5.2 million in the last year. A figure very close to 6.5 million pay-TV subscribers in Italy (Sky and Mediaset Premium).

In addition to the number of subscriptions it’s interesting to observe the number of users. In fact, for a single Svod you can hook up more than one user profile, so since 2017 we have gone from 4.3 to 8.3 million. Not least, the free services – such as Youtube, Raiplay, Mediaset Play – for which users have risen in one year from 17.6 to 20.9 million and taking into account the overlaps between free and paid users we reach 23.8 million users.

This is a picture that points to a flourishing growth for the sector, also from an economic point of view. According to It Media Consulting, revenues from this type of services will increase from 6.26 billion euros in 2018 to 8.8 billion in 2021.
