Alice nella Città opens its doors: the programme of the independent section of the Rome Film Festival, which will take place in the Eternal City from 16 to 27 October, has been unveiled.

Alice nella Città 2024 will be held simultaneously with the MIA – International Audiovisual Market and the Rome Film Festival.

Kicking off the 22nd edition will be a tribute to Christopher Reeve, the special screening of ‘Super/Man: the Christopher Reeve story’, by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui presented by DC Studios in association with HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, Word + Pictures and produced by Passion Pictures and Misfits Entertainment in association with Jenco Films.

Also screened during the event, in co-production with the Rome Film Festival, will be ‘Megalopolis’ by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by American Zoetrope and Caesar Film, ‘The Boy with Pink Trousers’ by Margherita Ferri, produced by Eagle Pictures, and ‘100 di questi anni’, produced by Cinecittà and Groenlandia and involving eight leading figures from Italian comedy.

Among the 14 films in the official competition come from Cannes 77 “Bird” by Andrea Arnold produced by House Productions and “Flow” by Gints Zibaldois produced by Dream Well Studio, Sacrebleu Productions and Take Five. Of these, there are eight movies directed by women and there are also “The outrun” directed by Nora Fingscheidt and “Under the volcano”, Poland’s choice for Best International Film at the Oscars 2025.

From the Official Competition of Locarno 77 comes “Luce” directed by Silvia Luzi and Luca Bellino with Marianna Fontana and Tommaso Ragno (voice) produced by Bokeh Film, Stemal Entertainment and with Rai Cinema.

In Concorso Panorama Italia there are 8 debut works including “My birthday” by Christian Filippi produced by Schicchera Productions with Media Flow, representing the strong partnership between Alice nella Città and the Venice International Film Festival, from which a number of titles from the Orizzonti and Orizzonti Extra sections also arrive, as well as new short films by Alessandro Rak and Alice Rohrwacher and JR.

On the TV series front, two highly anticipated second seasons are premiering: “The Bad Guy” produced by PrimeVideo and Indigo Films and “ produced by Groenlandia.

Ahead of the release of “Gladiator II”, a tribute to Ridley Scott will be presented with the screening of his first short film “The boys and the bycicle”.

Also returning is the Short Film Days event dedicated to short film operators that will take place at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and opens the collaboration with the tenth edition of the MIA – International Audiovisual Market.

MIA will also host a session of UNBOX: a project for emerging directors who have the aspiration to make their debut in cinema or serial films. This is a workshop and pitch day for ten projects presented by authors who have already made some of the most important short films in recent years. On this occasion SIAE will award the most promising project.

Also in collaboration with MIA, there will be a focus on animation that will feature Alessandro Rak and Giovanni Columbu in a conversation with Carla Vulpiani along with a number of other panels.
