At the States General of the fight against piracy, organized by FAPAV, the Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content Industries, representatives of institutions and industry in attendance agreed that it is time to strengthen the fight against piracy with new regulations and by focusing even more in awareness campaigns.

In the past year, the overall incidence of piracy among the population was 43 percent, but the number of pirated content has decreased: there are about 315 million illicit acts, 24 percent less than in 2019 and 53 percent less than in 2016. It can be inferred that the overall audience has increased but the frequency has decreased.

Among the most pirated content, movies (29%) continue to stand out, followed by series (24%) and TV programs (21%), but of note is the exploit of sporting events, which rose from 10% in 2019 to 15% in 2021.

Forty-one percent of pirates happened to enjoy subscription audiovisual content at least once through access with someone else’s credentials, not considering it a form of piracy” the official note points out , referring to the practice of sharing the same subscription among several people, even outside the household.

Ipsos surveyed young people between the ages of 10 and 14 and found that 51 percent enjoyed pirated content in 2021, with the frequency of the acts 20 percent lower than in 2019.

In addition to necessary enforcement actions, we believe it is essential that synergistic communication initiatives such as the recent ‘We Are Stories’ campaign, promoted by the Federation to protect and support the entire audiovisual industry, together with Anec, Anica, Apa, Mpa and Univideo” said FAPAV President Federico Bagnoli Rossi.

Even today, half of pirates mistakenly believe that their behavior is not serious, despite the fact that it is known to be a real crime,” – says Nando Pagnoncelli, president of Ipsos – “Evidently there is still a belief that the extent of the damage is contained and that the probability of being discovered and punished is not high”.
