From January to July 2017, the sale of television sets has decreased by 10% compared with the same period in 2016 in Italy. The collapse is not as significant as that in France (- 46%), but is still indicative of the constant decreasing trend recorded in the last few years: the single short recovery period was during the European Football Championship in 2016. The volume of business decreased significantly with sales, but the market could handle it thanks to the rise in the prices of televisions, with customers more and more interested in 4K resolution which replaced Full HD.

The crisis of televisions is due to various reasons, including the advent of other technological devices such as tablets and smartphones and the multiple ways of consumption, which allow everybody to watch what they want independently and everywhere, other than the success of streaming services such as Netflix, which encourage binge-watching, by releasing films and complete TV series.

The television didn’t entirely lose its function of object around which people gather, as shown by the slight increase in purchases during sporting events and football competitions. Families continue to keep the device on for more than one hour a day and to pay for TV platforms such as Sky, which offer a wide choice of TV channels and a large selection of on-demand content.
