Reed Midem, organizer of Mipcom, today announced the cancellation of the physical event in function of a purely digital event, Mipcom Online+.

Reed Midem had already imported changes to the event’s organization, adapting times and spaces to the measures required by the current pandemic and rebranding the event as Mipcom Rendezvous Cannes, but today the physical version was cancelled.

Director of TV Division of Reed Midem Laurine Garaude explained that given the continuing uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions recently adopted, Mipcom Online+ is the most appropriate solution to bring the global television community together.

The choice has to be traced back to several causes, first of all the measures adopted by governments: France has extended until October 30 the ban on crowds of over 5000 people (a ridiculous number compared to the expected attendance at Mipcom), while the United Kingdom has ordered a two-week quarantine to travelers from affected areas.

Some big names of audiovisual had already announced a digital-only participation, such as the British BBC Studios and Fremantle or the US A+E Networks.

Mipcom Online+ will be held in the same week of October as the physical event, with conferences and screenings under the Main Stage Cannes brand. The possibility of business meetings between the various departments of the audiovisual industry at an international level will also be guaranteed.
