The panel “How to Navigate Challenges and Opportunities in International Film and TV” took place in the Sala Trianon at the Westin Excelsior Hotel in Rome as part of MIA 2026. Moderated by Andrea Calderwood, producer at Potboiler Productions (UK), the discussion featured Daniel Campos Pavoncelli, Partner and Producer at Indiana Productions (Italy); Anthony Mestriner, Literary Agent for Film and Television at Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited (UK); and Lorenzo De Maio, President of De Maio Entertainment (US).
The discussion focused on the importance of packaging strategies in developing audiovisual projects capable of attracting talent, financing and international partners. The speakers highlighted how effective project and slate management, combined with the ability to build the right professional relationships, is essential to developing content and bringing it through to distribution.
Another key topic was the relationship between independent production and being part of a larger group. Companies such as Banijay and Fremantle illustrate how the support of a broader structure can facilitate legal affairs, business affairs, rights management and access to financial resources. Independent production follows similar processes but operates differently, offering greater autonomy in decision-making. The challenge lies in striking a balance between industrial support and creative freedom.
In an increasingly competitive market, assessing commercial viability and making effective strategic decisions are crucial to securing the resources needed to bring projects to production. At the same time, the artistic ambitions of directors and filmmakers require careful alignment with production objectives. Building strong partnerships based on trust and a shared vision remains essential to turning creative ideas into projects capable of reaching the international market.
