Univideo, the association representing Italian Audiovisual Publishers, has published a research carried out by the market research institute GfK on the Italian Home Video market. 4.5 million Italians bought at least one Home Entertainment product in 2018, with a per capita expenditure of € 64.2.

Home Entertainment revenue amounted to € 288.9 million in 2018. In detail, revenue from physical products (DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD) amounted to € 193 million and represented 67% of the market, despite a decrease from 2017. Instead, revenues from digital products, amounting to € 95.9 million, experienced a 19.2% increase from the previous year.

Italian films’ sales realised within three months since the film came out saw a 23.2% increase in value from 2017. Blu-ray 4K, with 123,000 products sold in 2018 equating to a revenue of € 2.7 million, grow by 50.3% in volume from the previous year. The data proves the consumer’s preference for high quality content.

The research highlights that the Italian Home Video market is changing. Digital products joined physical products: consumers can both buy video on demand and have access to content online. However, despite a growing interest for digital, Italian consumers still like to buy the DVDs.
