Starting from 2024, suppliers of on-demand services will be obliged to invest 20% in European audiovisual works, as established in the SMAV Directive (audiovisual media services).

The Directive regulates traditional television broadcasting, on-demand audiovisual media services and certain aspects regarding the protection of minors for video-sharing platforms.

As reported in the press release issued by the Ministry of Culture on November 4, Minister Franceschini states: “The implementing decree of the EU Directive on the provision of audiovisual media services, approved today by the Council of Ministers, confirms the desire to support independent producers. The implementation of the quota of the obligation to invest in European works produced by independent producers for on-demand audiovisual media service providers will be progressive, going from 17% in 2022 to 20% in 2024, allowing the players in this market a gradual alignment with the regulations through a reasonable time”.
