Following the agreement signed between Netflix and TF1, a new significant deal has been reached between a broadcaster and a streaming service. This time, the partnership involves Disney+ and Channel 4, under which content from the British public service broadcaster will become available on the streaming platform in Ireland and the United Kingdom starting next year.
The rationale behind these initiatives lies in streaming platforms’ efforts to enrich their offerings by incorporating new local content.
In its announcement, Disney+ describes the agreement as one of the most significant deals concluded to date, highlighting that some Channel 4 programmes will be available on the platform simultaneously with their television broadcast by the broadcaster.
The agreement will come into effect in 2027 and will offer three viewing options:
- The distribution of Channel 4 programmes on a day-and-date basis, meaning they will be available simultaneously with their television broadcast.
- The possibility of accessing Channel 4’s linear television schedule.
- On-demand access to hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted content.
The selected titles include the drama series Maya, the comedy Stepping UP and the format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Win.
Commenting on the agreement were Adam Smith, President of Direct-to-Consumer at Disney Entertainment, and Priya Dogra, Chief Executive Officer of the British television group Channel 4.
Their statements help outline the potential benefits of the deal for both parties, highlighting the strategic role of distributing content across different channels and the opportunity to reach a wider audience.
Smith emphasised the importance of agreements with local broadcasters, as they enable the platform to expand its catalogue and enhance the offering available to subscribers.
By integrating Channel 4 content into a broader distribution ecosystem, Disney+ strengthens its global strategy, which combines local programming, cultural relevance and a personalised streaming experience.
Dogra, for her part, highlighted how these synergies help deliver greater value to audiences. She also expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity for Disney+ to help Channel 4 programmes reach new segments of viewers.
