The full program of the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, which will run from October 28 to November 6, has been announced. The line up consists of 110 films, including a selection of ten world premieres by emerging talents, presented in the Asian Future section. In addition to being a showcase for Asian film production, the event functions as a presentation of the highest-profile international titles, including highlights in the World Focus section, a review of five films about Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni. Marcello Mio, directed by Christophe Honoré and starring jury member Chiara Mastroianni, will close the festival. Also in the same section is Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Next Room,” a late addition.

In addition to a section dedicated to animation, which is considered very strong, this year TIFF will also introduce the Women’s Empowerment section to explore women’s perspectives as directors and/or as protagonists of narratives, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, a section featuring a symposium that will invite female directors to discuss the past and future of cinema. Among the scheduled titles is the Iranian film My Favourite Cake, directed by Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha, who have been banned from traveling by Iranian authorities.
The new section is introduced a few years after TIFF became the first Asian film festival to sign the Collectif 50/50 initiative to promote gender equality in the film industry in 2021.

Opening the festival’s opening night was the action film 11 Rebels, directed by Shiraishi Kazuya, who said he was “thrilled that film is premiering at TIFF, the perfect way to kick off our journey.”
