To foster the development the co-productions between Italy and France, Institut Français Italia, in collaboration with Cinecittà, with the support of DGCA-MiC and CNC, and in partnership with MIA and Villa Medici, has launched Scenari Transalpini, a transnational workshop for feature film screenplays. The initiative provides support to six selected projects — three from Italy and three from France — and offers the opportunity to get in touch with experts in co-production, distribution and international sales.
The Italian projects selected for the public pitching session at MIA 2024 include the drama ÂMES BLANCHES by Anna Ambrosino and Annalisa Gandossi. Set in 1957 between Posillipo and Paris, the story follows Eleonora, a young bride-to-be, who discovers her passion for music under the guidance of the famous Nadia Boulanger, and has to face a tough choice between her family and artistic life. The lineup also features the comedies IF PARIS HAD THE SEA IT WOULD BE A LITTLE BARI by Paola Netti, which tells the story of Rosy, a Parisian woman of Apulian origin. While organizing the event Paris-Plage, she ends up working with Gino, a man who reopens old emotional wounds but also encourages her to give love a new chance; and TITANO by Vincenzo Cascone and Lorenzo Ongaro, an on-the-road story about four elderly people who break out of a retirement home in Piedmont to sell a rare truffle at Europe’s largest truffle market, in Provence.
On the French side, the selected projects include ELVIS AND ROMEO by Haïcha Ladrouz, which explores the journey of two migrant brothers fleeing from Africa to Italy and France and their bond will be tested by the harsh realities of the European legal system; LES MACARONIS by Johanna Legrand, a poignant tale of immigration and redemption set in the 1950s, following Teresa, a mother from the Italian region of Abruzzo, who is fighting for her emancipation in France against strict patriarchal norms; and LONG FEU-FIRE AWAY by Anne-Sophie Bally and Manuel Billi, set in 1918, which tells the story of Lucie and Clara, two women working in a munitions factory during World War I, whose unique connection challenges the social conventions of the time.
