New funds are on the way from the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) to strengthen the strategic value of cinemas, seen not only as venues for film screenings but also as vital spaces for social and cultural gathering, essential for enhancing the audiovisual heritage and promoting culture. This was announced in a press release by Undersecretary of State Lucia Borgonzoni, who shared details of a new €68 million funding call for the years 2024–2025.

The initiative includes a broad range of actions: not only structural and technological upgrades of existing cinemas and facilities, but also the creation of new cinemas through the purchase of premises; the reopening of closed or disused cinemas—particularly those located in municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants—with priority given to venues officially recognized as being of cultural interest; and increasing the number of screens in existing cinemas or multiplexes in urban areas.

Companies that have made investments between January 1 and December 31, 2024, will be able to apply for 2024 funding from September 19 to November 30, 2025.
