On the occasion of its 77th edition, which will take place from 7 to 17 August 2024, the Locarno Film Festival has announced a collaboration with MUBI to award a new cross-disciplinary prize called the MUBI Award – Debut Feature. The prize will be awarded to the director who will make his or her debut at the festival with his or her first feature film.

The decision will rest with the Locarno Film Festival’s Opera Prima jury, composed of Moroccan director and producer Khalil Benkirane (Doha Film Institute), Finnish actress Alma Pöysti (starring in Aki Kaurismäki’s ‘Leaves in the Wind’, 2023, distributed by MUBI) and make-up designer Esmé Sciaroni (recently on the set of Alice Rohrwacher’s ‘La Chimera’, 2023).

‘A new and prestigious collaboration to support emerging cinema with even greater conviction. We are very happy to collaborate with MUBI on a new award able to open new paths for young and auteur cinema, defending artistic freedom and creativity. A new collaboration but one mission: an award for today’s cinema that creates the premises for tomorrow’s cinema,’ said Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival.
