Carlo Rambaldi, the renowned special effects master and three-time Academy Award winner, will receive a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on October 15 in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce organised the initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Cinecittà, the National Committee for the Centenary of His Birth, and the Carlo Rambaldi Foundation. Those attending the star unveiling ceremony will include Antonio Saccone, president of Cinecittà; Cristina Rambaldi, the artist’s granddaughter; and actor Matt Winston, son of special effects master Stan Winston. The recognition celebrates Rambaldi’s contribution to world cinema and the value of Italian craftsmanship. Lucia Borgonzoni highlights the artist’s connection to the Ferrara region and the importance of training new talent, while Saccone emphasises Rambaldi’s ability to combine technical skill and emotion. Chiara Sbarigia and Cristina Rambaldi also underline the value of practical special effects and the need to pass this knowledge on to future generations.

The initiative represents a moment of great significance for Italy, as Carlo Rambaldi was one of the greatest professionals and artists in the history of cinema, thanks to the creatures and special effects he created through his extraordinary creative and hands-on skills. Among the most celebrated films that demonstrate Carlo Rambaldi’s talent and contribution to international cinema are several works that have made cinematic history.

Carlo Rambaldi collaborated with some of the most important Italian and international directors, contributing to films that have left a lasting mark on cinema history: Dune, directed by David Lynch, for which he helped bring to life worlds and creatures that expanded the expressive possibilities of special effects; King Kong (1976), for which he received a Special Achievement Award; and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, made with Steven Spielberg.

On this special occasion, the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles has also decided to present the exhibition Carlo Rambaldi: Dreaming the Cosmos, conceived by Cristiana Rambaldi and open to the public from October 14 to December 31. This important initiative highlights the versatility of Rambaldi’s genius, as he was not only an Italian special effects artist but also a painter, sculptor, and designer. The exhibition aims to explore the broad scope of Carlo Rambaldi’s artistic research, shedding light on the lesser-known aspects and fields of his talent, which focused on investigating the relationship between humanity, technology, and the future.

The tribute to Carlo Rambaldi is part of an international journey that Italian institutions have been pursuing for several years. The star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame represents one of the most significant honours of an artistic career that successfully combined imagination, consistency, memory, and emotion.
