IMAX cinemas experienced growth last year, the pinnacle of a trend that has seen IMAX screens flourish. IMAX screens have higher quality and are larger than those of other cinemas, thanks in part to Christopher Nolan’s film The Dark Knight Rises.
Some scenes from the 2008 film are with IMAX technology, which stands for Image Maximum, as in maximum resolution and quality images. Originally, more than 50 years ago now, IMAX was the most sophisticated technology, but for this reason it did not establish itself as a standard format, but became a special format. For filming, a special 70mm film is used and for projection, a room with a curved screen and special projectors is required.
Today, IMAX theatres contribute to the success of films at the box office, as in the case of Oppenheimer and Dune – Part Two, and conversely, IMAX cinemas have become increasingly successful thanks to productions designed to exploit the potential of these theatres. At the moment, the continent where most new IMAX cinemas are opening is Asia. Thailand, Malaysia and China will also be the countries of greatest expansion.
In addition to IMAX screens, there are also Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, i.e. screens that are more comfortable than average in terms of size and audio and video technology, and to date are the ones that withstand market downturns.
