With the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites, Warner Bros. marks a major milestone. Michael Chaves’ horror film is, in fact, the studio’s seventh consecutive title to surpass $40 million on its opening weekend, earning $83 million in the U.S. and $187 million globally during its debut.
The studio’s box office run began last April with the video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie, which opened to $162 million. It was followed by the thriller Sinners ($48 million) and several summer hits: Final Destination: Bloodlines ($51.6 million), F1: The Movie ($57 million), Superman ($125 million), and Weapons ($43.5 million). All of these films managed to maintain a strong theater presence well beyond their opening weekends, generating excellent profits and securing Warner Bros. a dominant position at the box office.
All eyes are now on the studio’s next big bet, One Battle After Another by Paul Thomas Anderson, set for release in September and Warner’s final title of the year.
There’s no reason for concern looking ahead to 2026, which is already packed with major projects. These include Wuthering Heights, a remake by Emerald Fennell starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, The Bride, a Frankenstein spin-off directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and two DC adventures: Supergirl and Clayface. Also on the slate are the original sci-fi thriller Flowervale Street with Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the video game sequel Mortal Kombat II, a new film by Birdman director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Dune: Part Three.
