Executive in Charge of Programming, CBC Docs – CBC / Radio-Canada
Lesley Birchard has worked in unscripted television in Canada for almost 20 years. As Executive in Charge of Programming for CBC Docs at Canada’s public broadcaster, Lesley has overseen multiple prime-time and digital series and specials, including the award-winning comedy series Still Standing and Gord Downie’s The Secret Path in Concert.
Lesley is a versatile and risk-taking storyteller who fuses television and digital production success with a passion for mentoring and inspiring the next generation of content producers. In 2016, Lesley spearheaded CBC’s digital-first strand ‘CBC Short Docs’, commissioning short-form documentary content from emerging filmmakers and creating a platform for their stories. Under Lesley’s leadership, ‘Short Docs’ has had a significant impact on the Canadian documentary landscape, and quickly established itself among other international digital documentary platforms.
Lesley recently completed her Masters Degree in Creative Media Education at Bournemouth University, focusing on the role broadcasters play in ensuring narrative sovereignty when working with Indigenous filmmakers.
